Επαναπατρίζονται οι τοιχογραφίες του Αγίου Ευφημιανού από το Ίδρυμα Menil στο Χιούστον των Η.Π.Α.

 Η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου ανακοινώνει με μεγάλη χαρά και βαθιά συγκίνηση την επιστροφή των τοιχογραφιών της Εκκλησίας του Αγίου Θεμωνιανού (Ευφημιανού) Λύσης, που βρίσκεται στο υπό τουρκική κατοχή τμήμα της πατρίδας μας, από το Ίδρυμα Μενίλ στο Χιούστον του Τέξας, των ΗΠΑ, σύμφωνα με τους όρους της σχετικής συμφωνίας δανείου, ανάμεσα στην Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή Κύπρου και το Ίδρυμα Μενίλ, που λήγει στις 14 Φεβρουαρίου 2012.
  Η επιστροφή των τοιχογραφιών, που παράνομα αποκολλήθηκαν από Τούρκους αρχαιοκάπηλους από την Εκκλησία του Αγίου Ευφημιανού μετά τη βάναυση Τουρκική εισβολή του 1974, και τη συνεχιζόμενη μέχρι σήμερα, παράνομη κατοχή του βόρειου τμήματος της νήσου μας από τα τουρκικά στρατεύματα και τη συντελεσθείσα καταστροφή και λεηλασία της θρησκευτικής κληρονομιάς του τόπου μας, κατά παράβαση του Διεθνούς Δικαίου και των Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων, αποτελεί σύμβολο ελπίδας για ολόκληρο τον Κυπριακό λαό και δυναμώνει την πίστη για τη δικαίωση του αγώνα του για ελευθερία και επιστροφή στις πατρογονικές του εστίες.
  Η επιστροφή των τοιχογραφιών αποτέλεσε προσωπικό όραμα και στόχο της Α.Μ. του Αρχιεπισκόπου Κύπρου κ.κ. Χρυσοστόμου Β’ και επιτεύχθηκε κατόπιν συντονισμού των προσπαθειών της Εκκλησίας της Κύπρου και των αρμόδιων φορέων της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, που εργάστηκαν με την προσωπική  καθοδήγηση του Μακαριωτάτου για το σκοπό αυτό, και πάντοτε σε αγαστή συνεργασία με το Ίδρυμα Μενίλ.
 Η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου εγκάρδια ευχαριστεί το Ίδρυμα Μενίλ για τη δέσμευσή του για επιστροφή των τοιχογραφιών και ιδιαίτερα για τη μοναδική πρωτοβουλία του για την προβολή αυτών των συμβόλων της Χριστιανικής πίστεως και αριστουργημάτων της Βυζαντινής τέχνης, καθώς, επίσης, και για τη συντήρηση και διατήρησή τους.
  Η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου ελπίζει ότι αυτή η πράξη τιμής του Ιδρύματος Μενίλ θα αποτελέσει παράδειγμα προς μίμηση για πολλούς άλλους Οργανισμούς, Μουσεία ακόμη και για ιδιώτες.
 Η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου προσδοκά τη μέγιστη δυνατή επιμέλεια και φροντίδα από πλευρά του Ιδρύματος Μενίλ για την ασφαλή επιστροφή των τοιχογραφιών. Η Εκκλησία θα συνεργαστεί με τους αρμόδιους φορείς της Πολιτείας για την ασφαλή τοποθέτηση και φύλαξη των τοιχογραφιών στην πατρίδα μας, με τις καλύτερες συνθήκες.
 Η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου έχει την πεποίθηση ότι η άψογη, μέχρι σήμερα, συνεργασία με το Ίδρυμα Μενίλ θα ενισχυθεί και θα διευρυνθεί περαιτέρω και θα ανοίξει νέους δρόμους για μελλοντική συνεργασία με το Ίδρυμα.
 Ευθύς μετά την επιστροφή του Μακαριωτάτου στην Κύπρο από την επίσημη επίσκεψή του στην Εκκλησία της Γεωργίας, θα ακολουθήσει εκτενέστερη ενημέρωση επί του θέματος.

RETURN TO CYPRUS OF THE FRESCOES OF THE SAINT THEMONIANOS (EUPHIMIANOS) CHURCH IN LYSI BY THE MENIL FOUNDATION IN HOUSTON TEXAS, USA

It is with great joy and deep emotion that the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus announces the return of the frescoes of the St. Themonianos (Euphimianos) Church at Lysi, situated within the Turkish occupied part of our country, by the Menil Foundation in Houston, Texas, USA, in accordance with the terms of the relevant loan agreement, between the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus and the Menil Foundation, which expires on February 14, 2012. The return of the frescoes which were illegally detached from the St. Themonianos Church by Turkish looters, after the violent Turkish invasion in 1974 and the continued illegal occupation of the northern part of our island by the Turkish armed forces, as well as the destruction and looting of the religious heritage of our country, all in  violation of International Law and Human Rights, constitutes a symbol of hope for the entire Cypriot people and strengthens its faith in the justification for its struggle for freedom and return to its ancestral homes. 

The return of the frescoes has been a personal vision and goal of H.B. the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II, and was achieved after the concerted efforts of the  Church of Cyprus and the competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, who worked to this end under the personal guidance of His Beatitude and always in perfect collaboration with the Menil Foundation. The Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus would like to cordially thank the Menil Foundation for its commitment to return the frescoes and, especially, for its unique initiative in promoting those symbols of Christian faith and masterpieces of Byzantine art, as well as for their first rate preservation and maintenance.

 The Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus hopes that this act of honour by the Menil Foundation shall constitute an example for many other organizations, museums, foundations and even private individuals to follow. The Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus expects that the Menil Foundation shall return the frescoes safely with the utmost diligence and care. The Church will work with the competent authorities of the State for the safe placement of the frescoes in our country and their keeping under the best conditions. Indeed, the Church of Cyprus believes that the excellent so far cooperation with the Menil Foundation will be strengthened and expanded further and will explore avenues for cooperation with the Foundation in the future. Extensive briefing on the matter will be given upon arrival of His Beatitude in Cyprus from his official visit to the Orthodox Church of Georgia.

The Menil Is to Return Frescoes to Cyprus

ROME — The Menil Collection in Houston announced on Friday that next year it would return to the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus 13th-century Byzantine frescoes that have been one of the museum’s main attractions for more than a decade.

The philanthropist Dominique de Menil, who founded the museum with her husband, John, and died in 1997, bought the frescoes in 1984 on behalf of the church, after evidence emerged that they had been looted from a Greek Orthodox chapel outside the village of Lysi, in the Turkish-controlled Famagusta district of Cyprus.

The return fulfills the terms of an agreement between the Church of Cyprus and the Menil Foundation, which runs the museum and which paid $520,000 for the frescoes, and later $530,000 more for their restoration and conservation. In exchange, the foundation was granted a long-term loan of the frescoes.

One, from the inside of a dome, depicts Christ Pantocrator surrounded by angels; the other, from an apse, shows the Virgin Mary and the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The frescoes have been exhibited in a chapel built for them on the Menil campus in Houston, which opened to the public in 1997.

Returning the frescoes to Cyprus was “always part of the reality, because we were never the owners, just the custodians and stewards,” said Josef Helfenstein, director of the Menil Collection. “I’d love for them to stay,” he added, “but at the same time this is the logical continuation of the story.”

Mrs. de Menil’s insistence that due diligence be carried out before the purchase, which led to the discovery of the rightful owner, was unusual at a time when other American collectors were buying antiquities with little thought to provenance.

The frescoes will be sent to the Byzantine Art Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Cultural Foundation in the Greek-controlled section of Nicosia, joining many other repatriated mosaics, frescoes and Byzantine icons that were looted from Orthodox churches in Northern Cyprus, then sold abroad after the Turkish invasion of the north in 1974.

“For the moment that is where they will go on show,” said Bishop Porphyrios of Neapolis, the representative of the Church of Cyprus to the European Union, though he added that the church hopes that the frescoes will one day return to their original site. “Now they would be in danger. We must wait for a time when they will be safe.”
